The AMOG SHEAR7 JIP, as a continuation of the Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV) JIP led by Prof. J. Kim Vandiver of MIT, works on VIV research of marine risers and flexibles. Results are used to improve the VIV response prediction program, SHEAR7. Current research topics include:

  • Reducing excess conservatism in fatigue damage rate predictions by calibration with full-scale drilling riser response data
  • Developing improved models of structural damping of umbilicals based on field deployed bare and VIV suppressed cables
  • Touchdown point research to understand limitations and guidance for use of time domain and frequency domain VIV prediction tools.
  • This work is sponsored by the SHEAR7 JIP (Joint Industry Project). “The SHEAR7 JIP” group has sponsored Prof. Vandiver’s VIV research for over 20 years. The current members are BP, Chevron, Petrobras, Shell, Equinor, ExxonMobil, and TechnipFMC.

AMOG, as the distributor of the program, conducts ongoing software development to include not only improvements in the programs capabilities and interface, but also to incorporate the results of updated data from the research program.
